Pro Tips

110 for police, 119 for fire/ambulance These are Japan's emergency numbers. 119 handles both fire and medical emergencies. Operators may have limited English, so knowing key phrases is essential.
交番 (koban) are small police boxes found throughout Japan. They're incredibly helpful for reporting lost items, asking directions, and minor emergencies. Look for the red light.
Japan has excellent lost-and-found systems. If you lose something on a train, go to the station's lost property office. Many items get returned, including wallets with cash intact.
During earthquakes you'll hear 緊急地震速報 (kinkyuu jishin sokuhou) - the earthquake early warning alert. Drop, cover under a table, and hold on. After shaking stops, check for tsunami warnings if near the coast.
大使館 (taishikan) means embassy. Contact yours immediately if you lose your passport. They can issue emergency travel documents. Keep your embassy's address and phone number saved.
