Why This Book?

Let's be honest: you will get lost in Japan. The address system makes no sense, GPS struggles with narrow alleys, and that restaurant you bookmarked might as well be in Narnia. But here's the secret - Japanese people are remarkably helpful. This book teaches you how to ask where things are, understand the answer (or honestly admit you didn't), and navigate using landmarks when technology fails.

Pro Tips

Start with sumimasen Always begin with すみません (excuse me). It gets attention politely and signals you need help. Japanese people will stop and genuinely try to assist.
Police boxes love helping 交番 (koban) are small police stations everywhere. Officers specialize in giving directions - it's literally their job. They have detailed local maps and enjoy helping tourists.
Show, don't say Japanese addresses are confusing even for locals. Show your destination on Google Maps or have it written in Japanese. A picture is worth a thousand confused conversations.
Station exits matter Large stations have many exits. Taking the wrong 出口 can put you 500 meters off course. Always ask which exit number - 何口? (nani-guchi?)
Be honest about confusion Saying 分かりません (I don't understand) clearly is powerful. People will try a different approach - gestures, simpler words, or drawing maps. No shame in admitting it!
